About / Somnus Technologies™
The infrastructure layer for sleep
and the upper airway.
Who is building Somnus Technologies?
Matthew Cronin, Founder & CEO, brings 25 years of medical device experience to shipping honest nightstand sensing and Index integrity first, then the longer loop.
Clinical Advisor Dr. Agustin J. Arrieta, MD (Otolaryngology / Sleep Medicine, South Florida ENT Associates) sees the unmet need firsthand in active clinical practice.
This is who we are.
Somnus Technologies is building the infrastructure layer for sleep and the upper airway: the closed loop most sleep tools are missing. Sense the night, score it, route to care, support the therapy, measure the outcome, re-score.
It starts on the phone you already own. Nightsong™ is our iPhone app, built on the BSA™ acoustic engine. It listens to your breathing and snoring, scores them against your own baseline into the Somnus Index™. What it captures stays on your device by default. If a night is not clearly heard, it shows no score instead of a guess. Nightsong is a wellness product. It is not a medical device and does not diagnose.
Somnus Index is a wellness metric under FDA General Wellness Policy. Not a medical device.
The engine is modern AI, kept honest. A learned model reads the night. Plain, fixed checks keep it honest. Both run on your phone. We are loud about how it is built and disciplined about what we claim.
Next comes the Somnus Bedside Node for richer, contactless bedside sensing, and our airway therapies, HYPNARA™ and MORPHEX™AI, in active development on the clinical track. They are not yet FDA cleared and are not yet available for sale.
Behind it is a first-party, patent-pending estate: 9 patent applications, 180 claims (10 filings counting the PCT), covering the closed-loop architecture, scoring, routing, and multi-node sensing.
Private by design. Wellness today, the airway tomorrow, one connected system.
Matthew Cronin
Founder & CEO, Somnus Technologies, Inc.
Matt Cronin founded Somnus Technologies after 25 years working inside medical device companies, close enough to patients and providers to see the same problem repeat: the tools to address upper airway dysfunction existed in fragments, and nobody was building the system to connect them.
His conviction: stay lean, stay close to patients and providers, own the loop. Don't become a company where care decisions are made by people who've never met a patient.
Partners and providers are bought in. The advisory table has met patients. The regulatory approach is deliberate. The build is staged so each stage de-risks the next.
Book a call"I see three to five patients a day with snoring and sleep concerns, and most of them have no simple way to see their own sleep and snoring at home. What excites me is that anyone can start tracking it tonight, on the phone already in their pocket. The more people who track, the sharper the product gets for everyone who uses it next. That closed loop is what today's tools are missing."

Questions about Somnus Technologies and upper airway dysfunction
- What is Nightsong + BSA?
- Nightsong is the Somnus app that turns a phone on the nightstand into a sensor. BSA is the on-device acoustic engine that listens for snore burden and breathing regularity. Wellness only. Not a medical device. Not a diagnosis.
- What is the Somnus Index?
- Somnus Index is a wellness metric under FDA General Wellness Policy. Not a medical device. It is a you-vs-you wellness number for snore burden and breathing regularity over your own nights. No Index if the night was not heard.
- What is Bedside Node?
- Optional richer sense at the bedside — a next hardware node on the sense track, not a requirement to start. Roadmap.
- What is upper airway dysfunction (UAD)?
- Upper airway dysfunction (UAD) covers conditions involving obstruction or collapse of the upper airway during breathing, most commonly associated with snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. An estimated 84 million US adults have OSA;1 roughly 80% remain undiagnosed.2 Snoring is the most common early sign of OSA. Context only — not a diagnostic claim.
- What about MORPHEX AI?
- MORPHEX AI is a future smart oral-device concept. Not cleared. Not for sale. Not the focus of what we are shipping now.
- What is HYPNARA?
- HYPNARA is a future therapy concept: a passive structural palatal implant. Not yet FDA cleared. Not for sale. Not the public product focus. Details on the Future technologies and Med-Device.
- How is Somnus different from a sleep gadget or CPAP?
- Start tonight on the phone you already have: Nightsong + BSA measure snore burden and breathing regularity on-device and build a you-vs-you Index only when the night was heard. Bedside Node is optional richer sense later. Future therapy concepts (MORPHEX AI, HYPNARA) are not FDA cleared and not for sale — they are not the public product focus.

2 Young et al., Sleep 1997;20:705 (Wisconsin Sleep Cohort, NIH-funded): an estimated 82% of men and 93% of women with moderate-to-severe sleep-disordered breathing were undiagnosed. Corroborated by Kapur et al., Sleep and Breathing 2002. 1990s cohort data; no modern national re-measurement exists.
